HarperCollins India is delighted to announce the acquisition of three books by actor – cancer survivor – wellness activist – public speaker and author Lisa Ray. These include a work of non-fiction, a novel, and a collection of poems, and follow her critically acclaimed and highly successful debut Close to the Bone, a memoir. The books will be published in succession, beginning with the non-fiction, a deeply personal narrative on healing. The novel, set to release in 2023, centres on the quest of a woman battling with her conscience and the inherent impulse to fly free. The collection of poems of protest marries text with illustrations and reflects the author’s feisty spirit.
Speaking about her next three books, Lisa Ray said: ‘I am thrilled to embark on this continuing relationship with books and with HCI. I thank them for their support of me and my words. I am truly excited and humbled to be able to focus on my writing career as I feel very comfortable in the skin of an author. I am so glad to have my literary agent Jayapriya Vasudevan of Jacaranda for believing in my writing and for being part of my journey.’
Talking about the acquisition, Diya Kar, Publisher – HarperCollins India, said: ‘Close to the Bone was testament to Lisa’s literary prowess. Her debut held the promise of a long and successful writing career. We are absolutely delighted that she has chosen us to accompany her on this exciting journey.’
About the author:
Born of a Bengali father and Polish mother in Toronto, Lisa Ray has had an acclaimed, expansive and serendipitous career in the entertainment arts, beginning in India in 1991, and spanning multiple countries and film (Oscar nominated Water), television (Top Chef Canada), and modeling (video for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Afreen Afreen’). Her entrepreneurial activities include starting her own yoga studio and a line of ethical perfume. When diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in 2009, she chose to publicly share her experiences in a blog called ‘The Yellow Diaries’ which led to her first book. A lifelong activist, she has become a high-profile advocate for Cancer Awareness and Wellness through public talks and writing. Her poetry explores themes derived from her identity-bending, nomadic experiences, the culmination of a life of no fixed address. Lisa’s upcoming acting releases include A.R. Rahman’s first production, 99 Songs, to premiere at the Busan Film Festival in October 2019 and season two of an original Amazon series, 4 Shots More Please. Lisa recently announced the birth of her twin daughters via surrogacy as a way to normalize fertility options and choices for others. Her memoir, Close to the Bone, was published to critical and popular acclaim in May 2019 in India and she subsequently signed a three book deal with her publisher, Harper Collins India.
