About the book
The Shergill sisters—Rajni, Jezmeen, and Shirina—were never close and barely got along growing up. Now, as adults, they have grown even further apart. Rajni, a school principal, is a stickler for order. Jezmeen, a thirty-year-old struggling actress, fears her big break may never come. Shirina, the peacemaking ‘good’ sister, is married into wealth and enjoys a picture-perfect life.
On her deathbed, their mother’s last wish is that her daughters make a pilgrimage together to the Golden Temple in Amritsar to carry out her final rites. After a trip to India with her mother years ago, Rajni had vowed never to return. But she’s always been a dutiful daughter and cannot refuse her mother’s request. Jezmeen has just been fired from her television job, so the trip seems a welcome break. Shirina’s in-laws are pushing her to make a decision; time away will help.
Arriving in India, these sisters will make unexpected discoveries about themselves, their mother, and their lives—and learn the real story behind the trip Rajni took with their mother long ago.
Full of warmth, and laugh-out-loud funny, this is the new novel from the author of the critically acclaimed Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows.
‘I’m really excited about the India release of The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters, about three British–Sikh sisters who travel to Delhi and Amritsar to fulfil their mother’s final wishes. It is my tribute to a complex and fascinating country which exists as the cultural soul for many people in the Indian diaspora. The Shergill sisters’ experiences are based on a similar journey that I took to Delhi, Amritsar and Chandigarh…This book is about how Indian women around the world find the balance between history, culture, and individual independence.’ Balli Kaur Jaswal
‘We’ve wanted to publish Balli Kaur Jaswal in India for a while. We’re thrilled that The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters will be out this month. It is moving, funny and life-affirming—Balli’s characters are terrific. This is the perfect summer read!’ Diya Kar, Publisher – Fiction
