announces SHUTTLING TO THE TOP
The Story of P.V. Sindhu, written by V. Krishnaswamy, that narrates the journey of India’s first and only woman silver medal-winning athlete at the Olympic Games
Out now as an e-book.
“P.V. Sindhu embodies all that a top sportsperson should have to attain success. She remains one of India’s principal contenders for the gold medal in Olympics next year. Go Sindhu, bring that medal home!” – Abhinav Bindra
As a nine-year-old, P.V. Sindhu had playfully designed a visiting card that said, ‘Badminton Arjuna Awardee’. Aged twenty-four now, she has saved space on her cupboard for the Olympics gold medal. Shuttling to the Top chronicles her journey between these two phases. This is the magnificent story of one of the finest badminton players in the world. It chronicles her life from the time when, while living in a railway colony in Secunderabad, Sindhu travelled over 40 kilometres every day by train to get to P. Gopichand’s academy and train. It documents the hardships she faced on the way to be a promising global star and discuss what lies ahead for the young athlete.
‘Imagine how tough it must for the athletes, who train all their lives to achieve perfection, but are now not able to train as they want to. Yet, they stay focussed and inspire us as do the warriors on the front line like doctors and care givers in these times of Covid-19. While we sit at home, let us take a peek into how a star is made and how Sindhu continues her training for Tokyo Olympics next year. I invite you to follow her journey in my latest book, Shuttling to the Top: the story of PV SIndhu. It is now available as an e-book.’, says author V. Krishnaswamy, whose past work, Sachin Tendulkar, A Hundred Hundreds Now, was a runaway success and translated in multiple languages. ‘It has been a pleasure to not only see Sindhu play, but also interact with her over the past few years. This book is my small tribute to a shining star.’
Krishan Chopra, Publisher at HarperCollins, added, ‘We are delighted to publish this inspiring biography of one of India’s foremost sporting stars. V. Krishnaswamy brings out just how hard the climb to the top is, and why P.V. Sindhu is one of our best bets for the Olympics.
“This book shows the extent to which world champions can go to thrive at the face of hardships, something that we are all trying to ace during the lockdown. It reveals the sacrifices of P.V. Sindhu’s father who even devised his own instruments at a railway workshop which Sindhu could use for her wrists’ exercise. The book that tells us about legendary coaches like Nani Prasad and Mahboob Ali and applauds their contribution to Indian badminton. From stalwarts like Prakash Nath, Devinder Mohan and the Deodhar sisters in the 1940s and 1950s to icons like Prakash Padukone and Gopichand to the generation of stars like P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal today, it’s filled with anecdotes, rivalries, insecurities, defeats and triumphs that show how modern Indian badminton has evolved.” – Ananya Borgohain, Commissioning Editor, HarperCollins
