ABOUT THE BOOK
Simla, British India, 1936.
On a cold, wet night, Ratan, a wandering law-college drop-out, is called to pick up his employer, Sara Davenport, from a party at the Governor’s residence. As he arrives, he sees a figure in the dark running through the trees. The next second, he sees Sara stumble and fall. He rushes to her, but she dies in his arms. Her throat has been slashed with a knife.
Ratan has blood on his hands. Sara was his employer, his lover, his friend. He decides to flee.
Ratan doesn’t know that when the body is discovered the next day, next to it would be a note … addressed to him.
Set against a country grappling with the colonial rule, this is a thrilling tale about secrets uncovered and innocence lost.

Talking about the book, Sonia Bhatnagar says ‘I was reading Chugtai and Manto, and thinking a lot about the meaning of the word ‘freedom’ and how little individual freedom may have meant at a time an entire country’s freedom was at stake. I wondered what it would be like to tell a crime story in a tumultuous period like that. With people feeling trapped in their own personal struggles. And I realized most of the traps I would be talking about continue to be relevant today. That almost a hundred years later, in many ways we haven’t really broken free.’
Swati Daftuar, Executive Editor at HarperCollins India, adds ‘Sonia’s debut is a standout one. She gives us complicated and fully realized characters, a canvas that’s dense with details from an era that was as fascinating as it was turbulent and writes about both love and murder with so much delicate care and finesse. An irresistible story that is the perfect combination of mystery and history.’
