Book Excerpts

No Regrets talks about anger management and a message from the Mahatma

Kaveree Bamzai’s #NoRegrets is a no-frills handbook for women with an inspiring take on living good and guilt-free. It is, however, not a self-help book. It’s a book that tells us what not to do, what to remember and what to forget. From being a mother to lessons learnt from our own mothers; managing money to marriage; coping with pain and anger to taking ownership of our health and growing old, Kaveree Bamzai, first woman editor of one of India’s largest newsmagazines, a wife, and mother of two boys and two dogs, tells us how to live a guilt-free life, with a little help from a host of highly accomplished women. With sparkling advice from Naina Lal Kidwai, Arianna Huffington, Sudha Murty, Smriti Irani, Twinkle Khanna and Sania Mirza, among others, No Regrets is the go-to book as we fumble and stumble through life.

Now, as we celebrate October as the month of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, here’s some advice from the Father of our Nation as it finds its way in this book –

The more I read, I find anger has been such a robust propeller of so much good. Read The Gift of Anger by Arun Gandhi, the Mahatma’s grandson, who spent two years as an adolescent with his famous grandfather at his Wardha ashram. Among the ten lessons for the modern world, he lists this as number one: Use anger for good. The Mahatma would tell his young ward, ‘Anger to people is like gas to the automobile—it fuels you to move forward and get to a better place. Without it, we would not be motivated to rise to a challenge. It is an energy that compels us to define what is just and unjust.’ Urging his grandson to keep an anger journal, the Mahatma said, ‘When we channel electricity intelligently, we can use it to improve our life, but if we abuse it, we could die. So as with electricity, we must learn to use anger wisely for the good of humanity.’
