The wonderful collection of essays presented in this book encourages the editor- Vikram Singh Mehta to share some reflections on how to re-energize and foment the growth of the gas sector in India. India’s economy is driven by fossil fuels and every report on India’s energy future forecasts that coal and oil will dominate the energy basket. The World Bank has estimated that the cost of air pollution in 2016/17 was equivalent to 8 percent of India’s gross domestic product (GDP). The question that has been the subject of much debate and discussion within the policy corridors of governments is: What must be done to resolve this dilemma? How can India pull itself off these horns?
Many papers and articles have been written on different segments of the natural gas industry value chain. Few have, however, looked at the industry through a lens that combines these segments into an integrated whole and offers the decision-maker a seamless overview of the entirety of the gas value-chain. The purpose of this book is to fill this lacuna. The book has twenty-four chapters, contributed by authors from diverse backgrounds. The authors address specific and separate issues of relevance to the natural gas sector, but the thread running through each chapter is the conviction that as India transits from a predominantly fossil fuel-based energy system, to one built on the pillars of decarbonization and renewables—natural gas should be the ‘bridge fuel’
The authors believe that the journey towards a secure, affordable, accessible and clean-energy future will depend crucially on doubling the market share of natural gas in the energy basket and that the next stop in this journey the next stop must be this milestone.
Edited by Vikram Singh Mehta, and with essays by a number of experts, this book lays out a comprehensive roadmap for India’s natural gas sector by analysing a number of factors including supply, demand, infrastructure, pricing, regulations, finance, technology, global policy and many other issues. The Next Stop is an essential overview of India’s emerging energy sector and global regulations in the twenty-first century.
