Review
βThis gripping debut about a Mexican-American misfit is alive and crackling β a gritty tale wrapped in a page-turnerβ¦ Part detective story, part coming-of-age tale, SΓ‘nchezβs novel doesnβt shy from heavy subject matter.β
-- New York TimesβThis book will change everythingβ¦ A perfect book about imperfection.β
-- Juan Felipe Herrera, Poet Laureate of the United StatesβUnique and fresh.β
-- Entertainment WeeklyβA wonderfully complex and interesting character.β
-- Los Angeles Review of BooksβIf you ever wanted to [understand] the harsh truths of immigrant life, this is the book you need to read.β
-- BustleβYears ago, I fell in love with Erika L. SΓ‘nchezβ stunning novel... The depth, wit and searing intelligence of her writing, and her young Latina heroine, struck me to my core and left me wanting so much more.β
-- America FerreraβWhy does everything hurt all the time?β might be the perfect YA fiction lineβ¦ It may seem melodramatic, but like so many questions raised within young adult fiction, itβs one we return to throughout our livesβ¦ The tensions of first-generation immigrants are explored deftlyβ¦ SΓ‘nchez gives an authentic teen voice here. Thereβs a specific ache associated with being young and hurtingβ¦ and it leaps off the age in this novelβ¦ This is a gorgeous novel.β
-- Irish TimesβAn earnest and heartfelt tale.β
-- BooklistβThis powerful, compelling novel covers issues relating to present-day teenagers β ethnicity issues, cultural stresses, mental health β but the vivid American context sets them at a slight distance for British readers, and opens up opportunities for discussion.β

I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is one of the best books that I read this year. It revolves around the life of Julia, a Mexican American who is in the process of accepting her sister's death. Although she's broken, her family does not seem to acknowledge it. Everyone is trying to point her problems out. Olga, Julia's deceased sister was the perfect daughter. But as Julia starts discovering new truths about her sister, a new story resurfaces that will change her perspective towards Olga forever.
Julia's character is obnoxious and haughty, just like the author wanted to portray her. As the story unfolds, we discover that there is more to her than meets the eyes. I slowly developed a liking for her. The book brilliantly portrays a lot of serious issues and deals with it subtly. It kept me on my toes and grasped me in the best possible way. β¨π«Ά

Verified PurchaseThis book follows the protagonist Julia Reyes through some difficult teenage years as she navigates trauma, personal growth, and being torn between two cultures.
This book is brought to life through the witty, blunt realist we meet in the main character. With a maturity that reaches beyond her years, she navigates the chaos of her teenage years. Who is she expected to be? Who does she want to be? We see Julia face many difficulties and hardships. This is a story of resilience and hope and gives a great insight into Mexican culture and identity.
At times, this story is heart wrenching and does not shy away from realising depictions of death, the impact of trauma, the breakdown of family relationships and self harm. So, there is a trigger warning attached for those topics.
However, this book feels important, something teenagers should read to realise βyou are not aloneβ and βyour emotions are validβ as you navigate this perfectly imperfect life.
