HARPERCOLLINS INDIA TRIUMPHS AT DSC PRIZE FOR SOUTH ASIAN LITERATURE 2018

1 February 2019

New Delhi, February 1, 2019:

No Presents Please’ originally written in Kannada by noted author Jayant Kaikini and translated into English by eminent translator Tejaswini Niranjana has been announced as the winner of the prestigious DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2018 at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet in Kolkata, India.

Jayant Kaikini’s compassionate gaze takes in the people in the corners of the city of Mumbai, the young woman yearning for love, the certified virgin who must be married off again, the older woman and her medicines; Tejaswini Niranjana’s translations bring the rhythms of Kannada into English with admirable efficiency. Empathy and survival are the constant, co-dependent themes that unify every strand of this extraordinary book, creating a shimmering mosaic of a conflicted city that is as kind as it is, at times, cruel.

Udayan Mitra, Publisher – Literary, said, ‘We’re thrilled that Jayant Kaikini’s No Presents Please, translated by Tejaswini Niranjana, has won the prestigious DSC Prize. I’m especially happy to see a work of translation and, also a collection of short stories being awarded this year. Jayant’s is a distinctive, exceptional voice. These stories, set in Mumbai and written originally in Kannada, have already travelled a fair bit; we hope that the book, which is the pride of our Perennial publishing list, will continue to find many new readers.’
