Announcement Creative – India's China Challenge

Ananth Krishnan Deconstructs India’s China Challenge in His Upcoming Book

25 June 2020

At this critical juncture in the India-China relationship, HarperCollins is proud to announce the forthcoming publication of

INDIA’S CHINA CHALLENGE
A Journey through China’s Rise and What It Means for India

by Ananth Krishnan

A book that will fill critical gaps in our perception of how China perceives India today, and has done so historically. From one of the most credible voices when it comes to reporting from within China.

About the Book

Ananth Krishnan first moved to China in the summer of 2008. In the years that followed, he had a ringside view of the country’s remarkable transformation. He reported from Beijing for a decade, for the India Today and The Hindu. This gave him a privileged opportunity that few Indians have had – to travel the length and breadth of the country, beyond the glitzy skyscrapers of Shanghai and the grand avenues of Beijing that greet most tourists, to the heart of China’s rise.

This book is Ananth Krishnan’s attempt at unpacking India’s China challenge, which is four-fold: the political challenge of dealing with a one-party state that is looking to increasingly shape global institutions; the military challenge of managing an unresolved border; the economic challenge of both learning from China’s remarkable and unique growth story and building a closer relationship; and the conceptual challenge of changing how we think about and engage with our most important neighbour.

India’s China Challenge tells the story of a complex political relationship, and how China — and its leading opinion-makers — view India. It looks at the economic dimensions and cultural connect, and the internal political and social transformations in China that continue to shape both the country’s future and its relations with India.

About the Author

Ananth Krishnan is the Beijing correspondent for The Hindu. In 2019, he was a Visiting Fellow at Brookings India. He was previously the Beijing-based Associate Editor at the India Today Group until August 2018. His reporting in China has taken him to all but three of China’s 33 provinces and regions. His interests include India-China relations as well as Tibet, Xinjiang and ethnic minorities in China. Before moving to China, Ananth was based at The Hindu’s headquarters in Chennai. Ananth holds a master’s degree in the social sciences from the University of Chicago.

Author Ananth Krishnan says, ‘The coronavirus pandemic and the recent events on the border have reminded us, perhaps in the worst way possible, of how China impacts our lives. Unfortunately, it only seems to take a crisis for us to pay close attention to India’s biggest neighbour. This is my attempt to unpack the country’s changing political, economic and social transformations over the decade that I lived there, and to explain how China’s rise impacts us in ways we often don’t realise.’

Swati Chopra, Executive Editor, HarperCollins India, says, ‘Ananth Krishnan has been a credible voice for more than a decade when it comes to reporting from within China. Now, at this critical juncture in the India-China relationship, the publication of his book, India’s China Challenge, will fill critical gaps in our perception of how China perceives India today, and has done so historically, how China under Xi Jinping deals with India under Narendra Modi, and the many ways in which the intricate relationship between the two countries has progressed through the period of China’s meteoric rise. Ananth separates the truth from the hype and the propaganda to give us a clear picture of the challenge China poses to India.’
