HarperCollins India to exclusively distribute the titles of Navayana Publishers in the Indian Subcontinent

1 July 2019

New Delhi, July 1, 2019: HarperCollins India is delighted to announce that it shall exclusively distribute the titles of Navayana in the Indian Subcontinent. This is an important tie-up for both HarperCollins India and Navayana—over 15 years Navayana’s sharp and focused list has set a high bar for editorial content and this distribution partnership with HCI will help Navayana books reaching a far wider and deeper market.

Navayana is an independent publishing company with a focus on the issue of caste and the writings of B.R. Ambedkar. Founded in 2003, its publisher S. Anand won the British Council–London Book Fair’s International Young Publisher of the Year award in 2007. Navayana is known for bestselling works like the graphic biography Bhimayana (translated into ten languages worldwide) and Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste with an introduction by Booker-winning author Arundhati Roy. Among its authors are Namdeo Dhasal, Kancha Ilaiah, Meena Kandasamy, Slavoj Žižek, Julian Assange and Anand Teltumbde. With alluring design matching its content, Navayana has created a distinctive niche for itself in the publishing landscape.

Navayana’s unique publishing range fits perfectly into HCI’s bouquet of books to Indian readers and the first book to be released under this new partnership will be No Laughing Matter: The Ambedkar Cartoons, 1932–1956 edited and selected by Unnamati Syama Sundar.

“Navayana is a name to reckon with among book-lovers. The distribution arrangement with HarperCollins will help us reach a wider market in a smoother fashion. This is similar to how Verso in the US–UK markets distributes via a leading trade publisher. Partnering with HCI, Navayana hopes to grow in strength. We have some exciting new titles lined up for 2019— Beef, Brahmins and Broken Men by B.R. Ambedkar with a powerful introduction by Kancha Ilaiah and Bhanwar Meghwanshi’s I could not be Hindu: The Story of a Dalit in the RSS among others. So here’s to more readers, more books, more revenue,” says S. Anand, Director, Navayana.

Speaking on the partnership, Rahul Dixit, Sales Director, HarperCollins India, says: “It is our pleasure to have Navayana on board with us. Anand is a remarkable publisher and highly regarded for his thoughtful publishing.  We are delighted to be representing Navayana in the Indian subcontinent. It’s a great addition to the range of books HarperCollins takes to the readers.”
