Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra’s speech in the Lok Sabha on Monday has made headlines. But this is not the first time that her speech has taken the internet by storm. Her maiden speech in the Lok Sabha in 2019 continues to be one of the most spirited in parliamentary history—one that celebrated the spirit of dissent.
Following are a few excerpts from her iconic maiden speech:
- ‘There is a powerful and continuing nationalism being sneered into our national fabric. It is superficial; it is xenophobic, and it is narrow.’
- ‘Every piece of news that this government repeats, every piece of news that they put out, every lie that they put out, they repeat and repeat until it becomes a truth.’
- ‘The spirit of dissent is integral to India. You cannot shackle us.’
- ‘There is a danger of fascism rising in India. It is incumbent upon all of us to stand up to it.’
